Download High Quality Geektool For Mac Os X

To really get the most out of GeekTool you need to be familiar with some basic UNIX/Linux commands. Fortunately, there is a growing library of geeklets already on the Internet for download that allow those without command shell knowledge to use GeekTool. It's simple to create geeklets that allow your desktop to come to life, animating and updating in real time. Within 10 minutes of our beginning to learn GeekTool our desktop was showing a moving clock, disk and battery capacity meters, and a running log of iTunes music being played.

We will look at adding a clock and a basic calendar to your desktop. Once you have GeekTool installed, you will find it in System Preferences. We have three options for the type of tool to place on your desktop. File will be typically used when you download eeklets. Image can be used to have a dynamic picture updated from a URL (such as weather images) or rotate though a folder on your computer. Shell, which will be looking into with today, can be used with terminal commands.

This simple tool can be used to add a wide range of customizations. In later posts we will look at other tasks that can be used with GeekTool and also some of the pre-made tools that can be downloaded A.K.A. Geeklets.

Start by downloading and installing the latest version of GeekTool. You can download GeekTool for free, but as with all free software you should consider making a donation to help support the work of the developer.

To install GeekTool go to the website, download it and double click to install the preference pane. You can now access it by opening System Preferences and looking in the bottom row of icons, double click it.

Whilst this is the easiest option it does limit the options for customisation. An alternative is to create an Applescript and to use the osascript command to access it. Create the following Applescript and save it. I have a "scripts" folder in which I have a "for_geektool" sub-folder

There are a million weather Geeklets out there, go download this one by ObiJuan2080 to get started. After you download the file, throw it into a "Geeklets" folder inside of your "Documents" folder so you don't lose it, then give it a double click.

The first step is to make sure you have the proper version of GeekTool. The official version is from Tynsoe Projects. While we can vouch for that download, we cannot guarantee any others will be safe.

Once you have downloaded and run the program, move it into your Applications folder. This will not only protect against wipes of your download folder, but it will allow GeekTool to automatically update when new versions are released.

Some people tried to solve the problem on the application layer, like Github's Boxen, but it solves a different problem, from my point of view. I don't spend a lotof time installing or downloading stuff. I spend time configuring it.
