The History of Kuimba 5

Kuimba 5 is the fifth album by Black Missionaries, a reggae band from Chileka, Blantyre. The band was founded by Evison Matafale, a charismatic singer-songwriter who was considered as the king of Malawian reggae. Matafale died in police custody in 2001, after being arrested for allegedly inciting violence against the government. His death sparked outrage and protests among his fans and fellow musicians.

After Matafale's death, his cousin Anjiru Fumulani took over as the lead singer of Black Missionaries, along with his brothers Musamude (who died in 2007) and Chizondi. They were joined by Peter Amidu (Matafale's friend) and Anthony Makondetsa (Matafale's protégé). Together, they continued Matafale's legacy by producing more albums under the name Kuimba (meaning "to sing" in Chichewa).

Kuimba 5 was released in 2008, seven years after Matafale's death. It was recorded at Ralph Records in Blantyre, and produced by Amos Mlolowa. The album consists of 10 tracks, each with a unique style and message. The album received positive reviews from critics and fans alike, and was nominated for several awards, including the Malawi Music Awards and the Kora Awards. Kuimba 5 is widely regarded as one of the best albums by Black Missionaries, and one of the most influential albums in Malawian music history.
